Bad Back Chairs - Upper Back

Upper Back

Upper back pain is linked to shoulder pain says Stuart Ferguson, Managing Director of Bad Back Chairs.

Upper back pain is often caused when your upper-body is twisted while working. The height of your back cushion can also have a bearing on discomfort. For taller people or people with "long" backs, an ordinary operator chair will regularly cause upper back pain because it goes 2/3 of the way up your back and does not give the correct support to this part of your body. This therefore puts your back under strain as you subconsciously tense your muscles. You can get chairs to combat upper back pain with very high backs for taller people or proper high back chairs, which are curved and offer support, while touching the whole of your upper back.

Discomfort with upper back pain also arises when leaning forward to complete tasks, such as writing, keyboard work and so on. Multi-functional chairs are made for a reason – All of those levers are not just there to be adjusted once when you first sit in the chair! Knowing how to use them will make a massive difference to your body in relieving upper back pain.

A good correct support chair, ergonomic chair, or orthopeadic chair will help to reduce upper back pain as they have good back angle adjustment, either independently, or in conjunction with the seat angle (the two are synchronised together). The back can be left "free floating" so that it moves with you when you lean forward or backwards. The key is to ensure your correct support chair is in contact with your back whatever position you are sat in. By all means lock the back sometimes, but good posture to relieve upper back pain is very much about your correct support chair moving positions with you as you move. The pressure required to tilt the back can be adjusted to people of different bodyweight or height as to what feels comfortable for you. This is called tilt tension or torsion adjustment.
