When it comes to lower back pain, Stuart Ferguson, Managing Director of Bad Back Chairs says he would like to dispel a myth here…
“Whether you have lower back pain or not, you should NOT sit up ramrod straight, like something from It Ain’t Half Hot Mum!!”
To ensure you do not suffer from lower back pain your spine should be in a vertically stretched “S” shape, not too stretched, as it would be if bolt upright, or too bunched and curved in more of a “C” shape as it is when you are slumped or slouching.
To add to the lower back pain problem, not all back curvatures or lengths of spine are the same, and again, this is why many chairs, such as a correct support chair, ergonomic chair, or orthopeadic chair have additional support in the lower back in the kidney or “lumbar” region.
Lower back pain is one of the reasons why there are different back heights available with some products. The back cushion shape can be supplemented by optional or inclusive inflatable lumbar cushions and adjusted either by push button or mini hand pump. This would be rendered meaningless without the other very important adjustment, back height adjustment, which enables you to move the lumbar shaping to match your own spine’s curvature.
At the same time you should sit right back into your chair so that you get maximum back support to stop any onset of lower back pain. The ideal back shape would be in contact with the whole length of your back when you’re sitting into your chair.
